Last Call For Racism was created as a call to action against anti-black racism within Toronto’s hospitality industry, particularly in nightlife. Systemic racism is woven into all aspects of nightlife and hospitality—from capitalizing on black culture, to limiting access to guests of color, to colorism affecting which staff get which positions. Black employees remain underrepresented and unprotected with little to no access to human resources and no accountability from management or ownership.
Our mission is to foster a movement around systemic change to push this conversation forward by sharing real-life testimonies from Black employees and guests, educating the public on racism and unconscious bias and challenging the establishment by holding them accountable and ensuring proper anti-racist policies are in place. This also means being active in BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities, supporting their charities or organizations, and putting Black employees in leadership and ownership roles.
Last Call For Racism is committed to the following:
Providing a platform for Black voices
Building a community around the cause
Highlighting how racism and prejudice show up in the industry
Calling out establishments that aren’t doing the work to become anti-racist
Holding establishments accountable for equitable and anti-racist policies and practices
We cannot dismantle racism with just a post on social media. We need accountability, conversation, education and action. Creating an anti-racist and unbiased workplace requires a continuous, inclusive dialogue and leadership.
